- Plastic fiber...
is it a new kind of optical fiber
No, it is not new...
...it is
INNOVATIVE.
At Luceat we didn't invent plastic fiber, but we're
the only
plastic fiber manufacturer in Europe, we have been the first to
promote its diffusion in
many applications.
Until now there wasn't a
valid alternative to copper cable.
Some years ago people believed that optical fiber, given its
immunity to electromagnetic noise and its
high transmission speeds, would replace UTP and coaxial.
Today diffusion of optical fiber is hampered by the development of faster and newer standards on UTP, but above all by cost and installation issues.
A cable is needed, having both the conventional optical fiber's
insensibility to EMI and RF noise copper's resiliency and ease of use.

An innovative cable?
It's easy... it's plastic fiber
Depending on the application, plastic fiber boasts considerable
advantages, compared to copper cables and to conventional optical fiber cables:
-
Ease of use:
termination require less than 25 seconds and can be made with common
tools. Plastic fiber tolerates misalignement of connectors, hence its operation is guaranteed.
-
Small size: a single plastic fiber cable has a diameter of 2.2mm and fits into any conduit, reducing installation's costs. It's ideal for museums, houses, shops, churches and where laying cables or new conduits is impossible or too expensive.
-
Standard compliancy: plastic fiber is made of insulating material and can share conduits with power lines, complying with the international standards (EIA/TIA 569, CENELEC EN 50174-2).
-
Instant testing: no tester or special instrument is needed to check functionality: just look if light comes out of the cable.
-
Immunity from interferences: plastic fiber is immune to RF noise irradiated by electrical cables, neon and antennas. The image is always perfectly clear.
-
Safety: unlike wireless systems which are unsafe at hardware
MAC, level, plastic fiber can't be tapped into and the communication can't be easily interrupted. Plastic fiber doesn't emit radiations, whose harmlessness has to be proved.
-
Savings: plastic fiber transmits video up to 300m (1000 ft) without repeaters, saving the cost of new conduits and amplifiers/equalizers.
-
Strength: plastic fiber cable tolerates bending radii less than 20mm, works from -40°C to +85°C and is guaranteed for a million bending cycles.
-
Mechanical endurance: used for many years in automotive applications, thanks to its resiliency to adverse environments, plastic fiber cable is ideal to link cameras installed on moving parts such as robot arms.
-
Resistance to humidity: plastic fiber doesn't oxidize, withstands humidity and salted atmosphere and warantees link's reliability for more than 20 years.
-
Electrical insulation: plastic fiber doesn't conduct current and can be used in flammable or explosive environments, no more need for EX-D conduits or expensive antideflagration cables.
-
Remote power supply: the
hybrid cable HyPer, which contains two copper wires and two plastic fiber cables, allows simultaneous transmission of video and power supply.
- Easy maintenance: anyone can repair a damaged plastic fiber cable in less then 30 seconds with a pair of scissors, a stripping tool and a crimping tool, avoiding maintenance costs.
- Operation warranty: indipendent studies show that the useful life of a plastic fiber cable is more then 20 years.
